In the early morning of April 12th, 1861 the Confederate army attacked Fort Sumter. Since the South had seceded from the Union they felt they should run all military buildings including this fort. Lincoln disagreed and would not surrender the fort. finally the commander of Fort Sumter did surrender.

They attached the Union Fort Sumter. It was in the Confederate states, so the south wanted the Union troops to leave it. The Union refused, even though the South said they would fire on it if Lincoln resupplied it. Perhaps the Union thought they were calling the Confederate states' bluff when they went ahead and resupplied it anyway. Seeing that the North was ignoring their claim and warning, and assuming that they would not be respected as an independent nation, the south opened fire on the fort. This marked the beginning of the U.S. Civil war.
