This question is difficult if not impossible to answer. It could be argued that the War of 1812 was the first war fought by the US, but the war against the Barbary Pirates began before that, and the Irish Whiskey Rebellion was before that. Does the American Revolutionary War count? It was fought before the US came into existence, and so was the French and Indian War. What about Korea and Vietnam? Do they count as conflicts within the Cold War, and if so does it count as a war? Wars against the native tribes? Wars in South America and the Caribbean where US forces were committed? Secret Wars? Police Actions? Interventions? Expeditions? The following wars are ones that I think should definitely count, but someone else with broader criteria may want to add more: War of 1812 Mexican War Civil War Spanish-American War World War 1 World War 2 Korean War Vietnam War Gulf War "The War on Terror" (political buzzword for insurgency in Iraq and Afghanistan)
