A cracked exhaust manifold should not cause a backfire, unless your engine is running extremely rich. It would, however, cause the engine to sound very loud and smoke to come out from the engine compartment. If your car is newer than 1996, than a cracked exhaust manifold would turn the Check Engine light on. A blown head gasket would cause coolant to leak into your cylinder head, which would cause large amounts of white smoke to come out of the tail pipe. If the leak is severe enough, then there would be noticeable puddles of antifreeze on the ground where the car was last parked. Even with a mild leak, the expansion tank under the hood would empty periodically and require topping off. If this was never done, then you would notice you car overheating (but the gauge may still read cold because it can only read the temperature of a liquid).
No, I recommend go to a mechanic, chances are your firing order is out or running bit to much fuel
you go to a mechanic
take it to a mechanic
To remove the intake manifold on a 2004 Mitsubishi endeavor, you should take it to a mechanic. An authorized dealer will also fix it for you.
sounds like you use a bad mechanic a good mechanic would replace a cracked exhaust manifold to start with if you can smell gas, there is obvioulsy a leak in the fuel system. this needs to be found as it is a fire hazard
Only if the mechanic is abusive and does not follow proper procedure
It is under the intake manifold so unless you are a competant mechanic you should go to a mechanic or at the very least get a service manual. Its not as easy as the old days
If the usual problems don't reveal the prolem have your mechanic check the intake manifold. These engines have a tendency to loosen the bolts on the intake manifold and the leak will damge the gasket. In time it will get worse.
Do it yourself, or mechanic? If you do it yourself your looking at $17.14 from partstrain.com. However, im sure if you took it to a mechanic they would tell you at least $80.
The knock sensor is under the intake manifold, which has to be removed. This should be left to an experienced mechanic.
Replacement parts to fix a manifold leak can be found at an automobile parts store. Most parts for the E150 can be found in salvage yards, also.
I found an independant mechanic, who works out of his own building on a farm, who does this for about $375
