During World War II, the major areas of conflict were the following: First, the European continent saw the greatest conflict, both at the start of the war and at its end, with tremendous battles fought on the Eastern Front from 1941 to 1945. Second, the Atlantic Ocean witnessed significant naval clashes, especially between 1941 and 1943. Finally, the Pacific Ocean was the scene of widespread conflict between Allied forces and the Japanese, both on land and at sea.
In Japan, the US occupied all of Japan and their possessions (many of which were removed from Japan) after the war. During the war they occupied any island they were able to remove from the Japanese military. They also occupied the Midway islands.
In Europe, at the end of the war, the US Forces occupied part of West Germany. If you look at the map the area they occupied looks like it is in the Southwestern region but really looks like the middle of the nation (prior to the fall of the communist wall). During the war they were stationed in some areas of Northern Africa and they had bases in England but they did not "occupy or rule" England.
They also had one place in Canada which was part of the Manhattan Project. The place was returned to Canada after the atom bomb was completed.
