Anglican Catholic Answer!

I think you've got the wrong chap, it was Henry's son, Edward VI and his Calvinist friends who ruined the place. Henry supported a theory that went back before the Norman Conquest where authority was held by the Bishops through the Ecumenical Councils, very much as the Orthodox and traditional Anglicans do today! It has been described as Catholic without the pope!

Henry did no more and no less, with the support of the Church, than say that the ancient canons of the Councils tell us quite clearly that no bishop is permitted to interfere in another bishops see? This shocked the pope, his support was in Europe and Henry was first to declare against him!

While on the throne of England, Henry VIII married Catherine of Aragon. He wanted the marriage annulled so he could marry his mistress, Anne Boleyn, after 20-something years. When the Pope wouldn't give the annulment, Henry VIII got so annoyed that he broke away from Catholicism and made the Church of England, going with Martin Luther's idea of Protestantism. Had Henry VIII not created the Anglican Church, it's likely that Protestantism wouldn't even be in existence today due to lack of popularity, let alone be the most popular religion in the world. He had his nobles and courtiers turn the old Catholic churches into new Protestant ones, or the nobles just took the money for themselves and let the churches rot.
