Not much (as to that 'president', see below). The often-repeated assertion that "he made the trains run on time" is based only on one remark he once made in passing to a stationmaster. His foreign policy - which he wanted to be his enduring legacy, namely the re-creation of a Roman Empire - was an unmitigated disaster.

His efforts to colonize Ethiopia were met with a humiliating defeat at the hands of a lightly armed Ethiopian army, before he managed to subdue them with copious amounts of mustard gas, thrown from planes. Italy was kicked out of Ethiopia in one of the first offensive military actions by the English, in 1941.

His attempt to invade Greece also met with defeat and his armies were pushed back by the Greek army far beyond the borders of Albania before the German army took over and finally defeated the Greeks.

Then he attempted to invade the already defeated France, only to be beaten again by the remaining French forces.

Finally his armies participated in the North Africa campaign under general Rommel. Rommel mostly used the Italians as cannon fodder and you can hardly blame them for their eagerness to surrender to the Allies whenever an opportunity presented itself.

Finally when the Allies invaded Italy, the Italians - sick and tired of Mussolini's adventurism - kicked him out of office and surrendered to the Allies. Unfortunately, the German army again stepped in, occupied Italy and made it a battlefield until practically the end of the war.

By the way, he never was president of Italy. Italy was a kingdom at the time. He was the leader of Italy's government, with the title "Il Duce"("The Leader").

Mussolini mistress strung up?

Yes, she was, but not quite in the way you are thinking. Clara Petacci was with Mussolini in a country hotel in northern Italy. They were caught by a group of partisans, who shot them both dead. They were then taken to Milan, the second city of Italy. After their heels had been tied together, they were strung up from a lamp-post, side by side and upside down. Mussolini did not have plans to leave Italy but instead he retreated to northern Italy. However as the partisans became more threatening, he began to flee. His mistress wanted to join him so she and her brother, Marcello, following after him. When the German convoy was stopped by the Partisans, the German leader told Mussolini to disguise himself in a German overcoat and helmet. The other Italians were not allowed to go. That was when Mussolini was captured. Later Marcello and Clara were captured but no one recognized Clara. Finally she asked to be re-united with Mussolini, which sealed her fate. At first, the partisans mistakenly thought her brother, Marcello, was Vittorio Mussolini, the son of Il Duce. The Communist Partisans gathered 15 prisoners for execution at Dongo. Marcello Petacci was shot while trying to escape this execution by jumping into Lake Como.

In October Mussolini ordered an attack on Greece, which resulted in the lost of 1/3 of Albania until Hitler assisted in the attack on Greece. In June of 1941 Mussolini then declared war on the Soviet Union as well as a declaration of war on the United States in December. The Italians were defeated time and time again and this had most people turning against Mussolini. On July 25, 1943 King Vittorio Emanuele III summoned Mussoloni to his palace and notified him that he would no longer have any power. Mussolini was then arrested and kept in isolation in Central Italy.

First axis power defeated in World War 2?

On September 8th 1943, Italy rose against Mussolini and formed the "Kingdom Of Italy" however, 14 days later on September 22nd, Mussolini and his followers formed the RSI or Italian Social Republic in order to continue their fight. When Mussolini was killed on April 25th 1945 the Italian Social Republic surrendered on April 29th. Three days later Berlin was captured and Germany fell. So in truth while Italy did surrender first they in reality didn't surrender in 1943 but in fact 1945.

How did political situation in Europe after world war 1 contribute to both Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler being able to rise to power?

It caused a sense of uncertainty in both Italy and Germany and made people want a strong leader. Hitler exploited German nationalism, while Mussolini offered stability to Italy after a period of economic stagnation partly caused by socialist and communist agitation.
