People got to the American Revolution by simply standing still. For the first few months of the Revolutionary War, the Americans fought a defensive war against British solders burning houses and towns. The Battle of Bunker Hill was an attempt by the Americans to stop the British Army that had burned Charleston, Massachusetts, from going any farther. When the British burned Norfolk, Virginia, then Virginia entered the war.

Most of the American Solders were farmers. They put in their crops and then walked or rode their horses to join the army. In places, they rode boats. In the fall, they went home to harvest their crops.
