Partly for ethical reasons.
Partly to keep a Northern majority in Congress, so they could continue to protect US industry (nearly all in the North) by levying taxes on imports (mostly needed by the South.)
The Republican Party was formed by Free Soilers who did not want slavery to spread into the western territories. They were not friendly toward blacks, they just did not want to compete for jobs or lower the wages available. Most western territories excluded blacks or made it very difficult for them to migrate into these areas, free or slave. Basically, the Republican Party was a working-class party for white men.
Federalists wanted a strong government, taxes to support the government, and liked banks. Republican party were for the farmers who did not want a strong government or lots of taxes.
The Whigs.
The Louisiana Purchase and Mexican American War certainly escalated tensions over slavery. For one, slave holders felt it was okay to expand slavery and their products and services into newly acquired land and territories. This was strongly opposed by early abolitionists that did not want the immoral act of slavery plaguing the new territories.
The North had opposed the extension of slavery because they didn't want the 'inhumane' segregation to spread the the newer joining territories/states. And they couldn't have yet attempted to abolish slavery all together at that point because the segregation force was too large and powerful. So they hoped to only turn new territories/states anti-slavery. Slavery was one issue, equal rights was another issue. So to say that Northerners did not like segregation is not true. Segregation existed in the North and the USA as a whole for decades after the Civil War.
As a member of the Republican party, Lincoln was opposed to the spread of slavery into the territories. Various legislators on both sides fought over this issue for years. The Republican party represented free, working white men who did not want to compete with unpaid labor in the west.

The Republican Party was founded just prior to the Civil War and it was a union of political supporters of: erradication slavery from the territories, internal improvements, abolition of slavery*, manufacturers, and trade intrests. *Many former Whigs and republicans (including President Lincoln) did not believe that slavery should be totally destroyed they just did not want the practice spreading to the new territories

Georgia wanted to secede from the Union because they believed Abraham's Lincolns election, and republican party's were strongly and aggressively anti-slavery.

Lincoln was the first Republican president, elected in 1860.He was a member of the Whig Party from 1832 to 1854 before there was a Republican Party . He was nominated by the National Union Party in 1864.This party was really just a name-change for the Republican party which was trying to attract anyone who did not want to end the war with a truce.

The Confederacy did not want to abolish slavery. In fact, they wanted to expand slavery into the new territories of the US.
Andrew Johnson ran for vice president in 1858 and won and was against slavery........ he was also a slave owner from the south in favor of getting rid of slavery, and he got rid of his slaves to run for vice president
