The Republican Party was formed by Free Soilers who did not want slavery to spread into the western territories. They were not friendly toward blacks, they just did not want to compete for jobs or lower the wages available. Most western territories excluded blacks or made it very difficult for them to migrate into these areas, free or slave. Basically, the Republican Party was a working-class party for white men.

The Republican platform in 1856 and in 1860 emphasized different issues. In 1856 they ran against polygamy and slavery. In 1860, they ran against the conspiracy of Slave Power. They were against the Mormons and the spread of slavery.
