In the early days of the ancient Roman Republic, a large army of Gauls around 387 BC BCE sacked Rome but were bribed to leave with many pounds of gold. Much later in Rome's history, peoples the Romans had conquered, became constant threats along the borders of the empire. The "barbarians" were Germanic tribes, Gaulists, Vandals, and Goths along with incursions by the Persians. Other barbarian tribes that invaded parts of the Roman Empire included:
A. Huns;
B. Ostrogoths;
C. Franks; and
D. Saxons.

The natural borders in the northern parts of the Roman empire in what can be called "central Europe" were the Rhine and Danube rivers. Incursions by Germanic Tribes for example were an ongoing problem for Rome. In the ending years of the empire, these river boundaries were crossed en mass by barbarians.
germanic, huns and slavs were the three tribes
At times during the Roman empire the Germanic tribes within the empire's borders or outside of them, attacked Roman legions or guardposts. Some became part of the Roman military as auxiliaries. Some were trained by the Romans and then used that training against Rome. Finally at the end of the empire the Germanic tribes were some of many barbarians that settled within the old Roman borders. Rome was in the end unable to defeat Germanic tribes in war.
The tribes of peoples that invaded Roman territory and helped bring about the fall of the western part of the empire were the Goths (Ostrogoth's and Visigoths) and the Vandals.
The Germanic tribes . In particular, the Vandals, Sueves, and Burgundians who invaded Gaul in 406. Among these there were The Alans, who were Iranian-speakers, not Germanic. They too were referred to as barbarians, as this term applied to all peoples who lived outside the empire, not just to the Germanics. The Alemanni, Germanics from southern Germany, took advantage of the mentioned invasion to take over northeastern Gaul. The Germanic peoples who settled in Britannia in waves were the Angles, Saxon, Jutes and Frisians. These peoples invaded during the Western Roman empire not after it. Their invasions precipitated its fall.

The barbarians were the Germanic tribes and the Vikings. Some combined to create the Visigoths. The word "barbarian" is Greek for "the stranger." They invaded the Roman Empire making it fail and created the world we call the "middle or dark ages."
The Visigoths were a group of tribes in what is now Germany prior to the fall of the Western Roman Empire (476 AD). The Visigoths were, among other tribes, considered barbarians by the Romans.

Goths
Particularly in the 4th and 5th centuries C.E., Rome was increasingly pressured and occasionally invaded by a variety of "barbarians" from outside of its northern and eastern borders. The tribes were mainly Germanic in origin; they often fought each other as much as they fought Rome; some of the tribes were eventually assimilated into the Empire while others merely passed through briefly. In all, however, the Goths and Ostrogoth's, the Saxons and Lombard's, the Huns and Vandals and Franks and other tribes provided the death-blow to the Roman Empire as it had stood for centuries.
