Burning oil, either over filled passed the "Full" level, or piston rings need replaced. it also depends on the color of the smoke. black smoke is usually a rich fuel mixture, white is either coolant/antifreeze and in cold weather its condensation, blue gray is oil as mention on previous answer.(this varies slightly for diessel engines) http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?UseCase=S001&UserAction=viewSimpleDiagInfo&Parameters=info
the tailpipe on a car is also known as the EXHAUST of the car where the gases from the combustion happening inside the engine escape.
valve seals and or guides bad
Steam? RX8 normally smokes from the rich fuel mixture. When you turn the car off, especially when it is cold, it steams.
Vehicle burning oil? Might not show when converter is installed due to high temperature produced by converter (oil is burned and disipated in converter before getting to tailpipe).
If you mean the smoke it's usually related to the quality of petrol
The muffler is failing, the "floss" is how the exhaust sound is muffled.
