Shifting is done by bumping the shifter left for gearing down and right for gearing up. The transmission will automatically start you in 1st gear if you forget to shift down at a stop and I believe will shift you up if approaching red line (not sure because I never let it go that high). All in all it is a nice feature and gives you much better control over the power that the car delivers.
