After WWI was the age of uncertainty was where everyone questioned what they before thought was good such as science, government, art, literature, ect. Plus this was when Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini came into power because the people were scared by WWI. Theses leaders rose up and offered the people solutions so they took it. (which ended up to be a bad idea cause theses were very bad ppl) Art began to change this is when cubism, the dada movement, surrealism, and other art movements happened. In science quantum physics, theory of relativity, Freud's ideas took affect. Literature began to change as well authors had their characters deal with impossible situations that couldn't be solved.

In Western Europe, the period from about 500-700 AD is often called the Dark Ages. In fact from about 410 AD onwards the western part of the empire was overrun by various group of barbarian invaders.

The Eastern Empire fared better and under Emperor Justinian succeeded in reconquering some of areas lost by the Western Empire, including much of southern Italy, parts of North Africa and some areas of Gaul and Spain near the Mediterranean coast. However, they were unable to hold on to these areas for long.
