Austria Hungary was made up of many ethnic groups , eg , Slavs , Czech's , Germans , Hungarians , Latvians , Polish etc. Many thought the First World War would expose the weaknesses of their army because they would not form alliances with each other. They were however not like that.
Like Russia, food shortages led to starvation , low morale and eventually mutiny and riots. The war effort was similiary affected but by strikes. The railway system couldn't transport and keep up with the demands of an industrial war. The Austrians started to blame the Germans for using them to die on the battlefield , whilst the Germans thought the Austrians useless. As the war went on and winning seemed now impossible the Czech's , Polish and Crotians declared themselves independent and the Hapburg empire was crumbling.
Rulers do not generally survive defeat and in Novewmber 1918 the monarchy was abolished. The Social Democrats and Christian Social Parties formed a coalition government , to help keep out communism. Under the Versailles Settlement , in September 1919 Austria was denied the chance to unite with Germany and became a smaller ,mostly rural country ,with a loss of much of her industry, especially coal.
