The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), also called the North Atlantic Alliance, the Atlantic Alliance or the Western Alliance, is an international organisation for collective security established in 1949, in support of the North Atlantic Treaty signed in Washington, DC, on 4 April 1949. Its headquarters are located in Brussels, Belgium. Its other official name is the French equivalent, l'Organisation du Trait de l'Atlantique Nord (OTAN).
The military organization NATO was created during the Cold War to ensure that the USSR would not take advantage of European countries bordering the Soviet bloc. This organization initially consisted of the US, UK, Canada, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Portugal, and also West Germany. France participated in NATO exercises, but never officialy signed on.
It was expected to contain the major thrust of any USSR incursions, and allow enough time for the rest of the western nations to provide reinforcements. It was felt that it would be critical to stop or slow down any Soviet attack within the first few days.
Since NATO's inception, other countries have joined, and since the Warsaw Pact crumbled in 1991, former Soviet satellite countries have also requested admission, as they still perceive a Russian threat in Eastern Europe.
During WWII France, Britain, and the U.S. created NATO to stop communism mostly in Europe, but in the modern day of age NATO has become worldwide to stop communism , Dictatorship, and terrorism.
After World War 1, much of Europe became divided into a number of small nations. By 1930 Russia had conquered Belorussia, Ukraine, and the nations of the Caucus. With World War 2, Germany and Russia conquered many of the rest.
Following World War 2, it look as if Russia wanted to conquer the world. Russia had an extremely powerful army and no one nation in Europe could stand up to Russia. The nations of Europe needed to band together to keep Russia at bay. As a result they formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. If Russia attacked one nation, the rest would come to its defense. They got the United States to join.
Since the United States had the only army large enough to oppose Russia, it became the senior partner. If Russia attacked, it would take the lead and the other nations would follow its command. (At the time England was the only other possibility. But since it was in Europe, jealousy made the United States the better choice.) When Gorbachev became the leader of Russia, the need for a mutual defense force against Russian aggression greatly lessened but Nato still existed.
Today Nato still exists to provide for the common defense. It is having difficulty defining the common enemy.
