Star anise comes from the star-shaped flower of a small evergreen tree.

It is used in Chinese and Indian cooking, as an ingredient in 5-spice powder and garam masala.

Star anise tea has been used to treat rheumatism. Anise seed comes from the flowering anise plant. The seeds are sweet and licorice-like in flavor, resembling fennel seeds.

They are commonly used in making sweet treats around the world.

Anise seed aids digestion and sweetens breath. It is also a mild expectorant. A few seeds taken with water may cure hiccups.

Star Anise is similar in flavor to Anise but not the same. Star Anise has a much stronger liquorice flavor. In a recipe, you can substitute Anise for Star Anise by using the same amount and a pinch of fennel to increase the liquorice flavor, but not the other way around.

After doing some research on Wikipedia it does not appear to be the same thing. I had the same question! According to Wikipedia, Star fruit is also known as Carambola and is native to the Philippines, Indonesia, India. It is an actual fruit that is consumed when ripe off the tree. Whereas, Star Anise is a seed pod that is commonly called Chinese star anise, star anise or star aniseed and it is from the Illicium verum species of plant. It is native to China and is never consumed unless it is dried and made into a spice.
