I own a 2000 model odyssey, and have purchased the shop manual for it. From all indications, which include this manual and numerous internet searches, the only 'safe' fluid to use is Honda ATF-Z1, available only at Honda service centers.
I've also talked to the service department locally, and they can site numerous transmission replacements due to using other ATF fluids.
Valvoline makes a compatible Z1 fluid- check the bottle. It's designated for high-mileage cars. I've used it since the 80000 mile mark and have no complaints.

I think you have misread your owners manual as it will not tell you to only use Honda Oil. Honda does not even refine oil and Honda oil is a major brand that is packaged for Honda with their name on the can.
