∙ 13y agoIt was Franklin Delano Roosevelt who first successfully discarded the two-term tradition set by George Washington (the first U.S. President), and was elected to four consecutive terms. However his cousin Theodore Roosevelt was the first to attempt election to a third term as President. Nevertheless, it was immediately after the FDR administration that Congress and the States decided to make a two-term limit for the President part of the U.S. Constitution.

∙ 12y agoFranklin Roosevelt prompted the 22nd amendment when he broke George Washington's long-standing precedent of refusing to serve for more than two terms in 1940 when he ran for a 3rd term ( and won).

∙ 9y agoI don't think any president called for the repeal of this term-limit amendment. Two-terms is enough for most and it would be political damaging to ask for more,especially since the President is not involved in repealing amendments. Also, since that amendment was ratified, no president but, maybe, Eisenhower had even a remote chance of being elected to a third term,and Eisenhower was in poor health when he completed his second term.
