After the Second World War the following countries were re-established and with a few years came under Soviet influence and were allies of the USSR:
- Poland
- German Democratic Republic (also known as East Germany)
- Czechoslovakia
- Hungary
- Romania
- Bulgaria
Austria was divided, and part was under the control of the USSR, but in 1955 all of Austria became an independent neutral country.
Finland signed a peace treaty with the USSR, lost some territory, but became an independent neutral country.
Yugoslavia and Albania were initially under the influence, but eventually managed to establish their independence.
The economic and technical assistance offered by the Marsall Plan was not accepted by the Soviets and it's satellites in Eastern Europe.
