Canadians have fought in many wars. Most notably:

War of 1812

Boxer Rebellion

Boer War

WWI

WWII

Korea

Gulf War

Yugoslavia

Afghanistan

It was only beginning in WWI that Canadians formally served as a sovereign power, rather than as a part of the imperial British forces.

Canada has also participated in numerous peacekeeping missions, including Bosnia, Cyprus, the Sinai, Vietnam, Latin America, Indonesia and Rwanda.

Canadians have also served as members of foreign militaries. For instance, there were many Dual-Citizenship Canadians serving as U.S. personnel in Vietnam.

What war? Canadian troops were first used in the failed Dieppe raid on the German-occupied coast of France. Thent the government insisted that their troops be used in the war so they were sent to Italy in 1944. The 1st Canadian Division fought under the command of the British 8th Army on the East coast of Italy. One of the roughest battles was the Battle of Ortona in December 1943. Canandian troops were used in the D-Day invasion. The 3rd Canadian Division was deployed to campaign in France.

Canada was involved fully in World War 1. When World War I broke out in 1914, all Dominions of the British Empire, including Canada, were called upon by Great Britain to fight on its behalf. Canada's sacrifices and contributions to the war changed its history and enabled it to become more independent, while opening a deep rift between the French and English speaking populations. For the first time in its history, Canadian forces fought as a distinct unit under a Canadian-born commander. Battles such as Vimy Ridge, Second Battle of Passchendaele and the Battle of the Somme are still remembered today by anglophones as part of Canada's founding myth, to both its identity and culture. Canada's total casualties stood at 67,000 killed and 173,000 wounded.
