Captain John Paul Jones was living in Virginia when the American revolution began. He knew that Benjamin Franklin was in Paris seeking support for the American Revolution. Jones sailed to Paris and explained his plan for naval operations. To do it required outfitting ships for sea battles and he sought Franklin's help. He wanted to attack England and English ships in England's home waters. As it turned out he was successful in harassing the coasts of Scotland and England in 1778. He raided seaports and attacked towns. Franklin did persuade France to provide a ship, christened the Bonhomme Richard.
