At one point in time during the US Civil War, Black recruits to the Union army were extremely helpful. While they could not replace veteran soldiers that were casualties, they could effectively be used to guard communication and supply lines of the Union army. They also had success on the battle fields as well, but not to the degree of settling either a victory or a defeat. This only because of the time required new recruits, Black or White.
