In March of 1862, Confederate General PT Beauregard withdrew his forces to Corinth, Mississippi. This was an important location as the city was located at the junction of the Mobile and Ohio and the Memphis and Charleston rail lines. It was the Confederacy's only direct rail connection with the Eastern Theater. Corinth was protected from attack down the Mississippi River by Confederate fortifications on Island No. 10 located in the river. Northern forces had the advantage, but Island Number 10, needed to be reduced. On March 15, 1862, a Union group of gunboats to up threatening positions against the fortified island. Union ships were fired upon from the Southern artillery, however, the Union remained persistent. By April 8, 1862, the Confederate position on the island became untenable, as Union gunships resumed their artillery bombardment of the island. On April 8, 1862, the Southern forces on the island were forced to surrender. Captured were 7,000 Confederate troops. This left Union General Henry Halleck the opportunity to focus on Corinth, however, Halleck wasted time on his advance to Corinth.
