The 27 Battleships in service during WW-II were (listed in order of their hull number):

  • USS Utah - Became a target ship in 1931 and was no longer a battleship at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack
  • USS Wyoming - Became a training ship in 1931 and was used for gunnery training during WWII and not in a combat role
  • USS Arkansas
  • USS New York
  • USS Texas
  • USS Nevada
  • USS Oklahoma
  • USS Pennsylvania
  • USS Arizona
  • USS New Mexico
  • USS Mississippi
  • USS Idaho
  • USS Tennessee
  • USS California
  • USS Colorado
  • USS Maryland
  • USS West Virginia
  • USS North Carolina
  • USS Washington
  • USS South Dakota
  • USS Indiana
  • USS Massachusetts
  • USS Alabama
  • USS Iowa
  • USS New Jersey
  • USS Missouri
  • USS Wisconsin

The USS Utah and USS Wyoming were no longer considered battleships at the time WWII started for the US. Neither saw combat during WWII.

The USS Utah and the USS Arizona were both sunk at Pearl Harbor. The USS Oklahoma, Nevada, California, and West Virginia were also sunk, but were refloated and repaired, excepting the Oklahoma, which sank during tow back to the US mainland. All the other battleships listed above participated in actual combat (either surface or anti-air). The US lost no further battleships from any cause during WW2.

During WW2 ONLY (after WW2 the Navy re-structured their naming systems for warships): 1. Fleet Carriers (CVC) were named after Revolutionary War battles and ships; example: USS Yorktown (Battle of Yorktown), USS Enterprise (Revolutionary War American Warship Enterprise-we were NOT a United States back then, so they couldn't be called "USS"). 2. Light Carriers (CVL) were named after the same as above. Example: USS Princeton (named after the American Warship "Princeton"). 3. Escort Carriers (CVE) named after bays/inland seas. Example: USS Bismarck Sea. 4. Battleships were named after US states: USS Arizona, USS Nevada, Utah, California, West Virginia, Tennessee, Florida, Arkansas, Texas, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Washington, South Dakota, North Carolina, Alabama, New York, Oklahoma, Iowa, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Missouri. 5. Cruisers were named after US cites: USS Houston, USS Vincennes, USS Chicago, USS Astoria, USS Atlanta. 6. Destroyers were named after US Sailors: USS Fletcher, USS Hoel, USS Spence. 7. Submarines were named after Fish: USS Ling, USS Shark, USS Tang, USS Gato.

They are no longer active, but they still exist: USS Iowa (Class Leader), USS New Jersey (the only Vietnam War veteran), USS Missouri (WW2 Surrender signed upon her decks), USS Wisconsin. USS North Carolina (the only US battleship nearly sunk in battle, when torpedoed by an I-Boat), USS Alabama, USS Massachuetts, and the USS Texas (the only known DREADNAUGHT still in existence).

Which Marine had the first battleship named after him?

No US battleships were named after a US Marine. 1. US battleships were named after states, with the only exception being the USS Kearsarge which was named after the Union warship USS Kearsarge of the Civil War, which in turn was named after a location. It took an act of congress to name the US battleship the Kearsarge instead of a state. USS Kearsarge (BB-5), a pre-dreadnaught, was launched in 1898 and scrapped in 1920. Battleships launched from 1906 afterwards were classified as Dreadnaughts (HMS Dreadnaught was launched in 1906). During WWII ONLY (after WWII, the USN started whole new categories for their warships, subs, etc.). 2. US Cruisers were named after US cities. 3. US Subs were named after fish. 4. Fleet carriers/Light carriers were named after Revolutionary War ships & battles. 5. Escort Carriers (aka jeep carriers) were named after bays. 6. Destroyers were named after US sailors and US marines.

48 states of the United States are the names of US Navy battleships. The battleships Alaska and Hawaii do not exist nor never existed because they were NOT states until 1959; battleships were no longer built after 1945. Battlecruisers (called LARGE cruisers in the US Navy) Alaska & Guam were completed; Hawaii never was. With the exception of the USS Kearsarge, all US battlewagons were named after US states.
