DO NOT REMOVE THE THERMOSTAD...I have 96 Cherokee which overheated constantly...,

I now have a rock solid :stable: cooling system (running in 40 deg celsius) water temp at 98 deg...

by doing the following....,

1,(the cheapest)= A new radiator cap. 1 pound of preasure = 3 deg Fahrenheit. raise boilingl point. If your cap looses preasure from the system you have a prob...a hot prob.

2, New thermostad .(i live in a hot climate so 180 deg thermostad. giving that 10 deg leway for the coolant to flow fully prior to reaching the optimal 100 deg for this motor) .be shure to drill 2x 1/4 in" holes in the top of the thermostad flange,,prior to instillation. Either side of the already in place, factory breather is a nice spot.

this will allow the air to escape when refilling the system while the engine is running, through the radiator with the cap removed, . TRAPPED AIR IS A KILLER.. the 4lHO like to trap air.

3, Fan clutch replace..have installed heavy duty..(larger workin area and more RPM when heated)

4, Water pump replace.

5, After market temp guage as the factory one is crap.

I have a 96 jeep Cherokee sport that is doing the same exact thing. if you find out an answer email me jordanprint123@AOL.com

I have a 93 Cherokee that is having the same problem. I have replaced the O2 sensor, the fan clutch, thermostat, auxillary fan relay. I have flushed the radiator, and still am having the same problem. Yesterday I took out the thermostat. I will let you know if this takes care of the problem. I live in Phoenix, so there really is no need for it. If the abscence of the thermostat doesn't do the trick, I will start with the electrical system. Not sure where, but I'm not there yet.

I asked my local Jeep dealer, and they didn't know where to start. I took it to another mechanic that I trust, and they didn't know.

Stay tuned, daluka444@Yahoo.com

The most common thing on the Cherokee overheating at idle is a fan clutch failure. it may spin but the resistance may be too weak to pull enough air through the radiator.
