Often there is a switch on the dashboard, or an "on" function to an existing switch, such as a dimmer switch. It merely needs to be turned "off" and doors closed, to watch for light going out, notwithstanding any timer or short convenience period.
The most common cause of a dome light staying on in a Mercury Sable is electrical issues. If a fuse becomes disconnected or is loose this can cause the light to remain on. Check the dimmer switch and the plunger switches in the door jambs.
A likely cause is a faulty interior light dimming switch. This switch is directly connected to both the dash lights (for dimming), and the dome light (on/off).
Many rangers have a micro-switch built into the door latch that grounds when the door is shut. If the switches become dirty, they will cause the dome light, chime, and door ajar light to stay on. A few shots of contact cleaner should do them justice.

Hey Eddie==Check the light switch to make sure it is turned correctly to keep it off. If ok, check the lighter fuse, as if it blows sometimes it turns the light on. goodluckJoe If your tailgate is ajar it will also cause the light to stay on.
try looking at the swithes located where you door hinges are one of them might be shorted out causing your dome light to stay on.
A malfunctioning sensor can cause the service engine light to stay on. A glitch in the computer can also cause the light to stay on.
Perhaps you turned on the interior lights when you were adjusting the headlights?
Either the manual light switch is on or the door switch is damaged.
