Israel declared their independence from the British in 1948. Then was attacked by six other countries within an hour who refused to accept it as a nation. There was never peace because they claimed Israel was not a nation so a ceasefire was called instead. The phrasing of the question misconstrues the authority of the United Nations Resolution 181. Most people incorrectly believe that the UN Resolution "created" a Jewish State (Israel) and an Arab State (Palestine) on the map. This is not the case. What the UN Resolution does provide for is the permission for the different ethno-religious groups in Mandatory Palestine to declare a state. In the case of most mandates, the understanding was that the mandate would eventually become independent as one new state, like Iraq or Syria had. The case of Palestine was therefore unique and needed the permission to deviate from the traditional path of independence. Because of there being two states, provisional borders had to be provided, which is why a map was used, but those borders would only come into play if both sides decided to remain at peace.

The Jews acted on the permission granted to them by UN Resolution 181 by declaring independence on May 14, 1948 (nearly six months after the Resolution was passed) and therefore creating the State of Israel.

Israel was given back to its rightful owners the Jews that longed to have their own homeland again, after being prosecuted for their believes for hundreds of years. It was decided unanimously by the UN that the Jews should have their homeland back. When the State of Israel was created, it was attacked shortly after that by all surrounding Arab countries. Despite its ill prepared outnumbered army, it managed to drive back its enemies against all odds. Rather than occupying its aggressors home land, which they could have done, they decided to try and live in peace with it's neighbors. A very difficult task as history shows, since they were repeatedly attacked again. It is true that there were some Palestinians living in Israel at the time, like there were Palestinians living in Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, etc. The point being that Israel was never their homeland. Israel, after winning the war and driving its enemies back, gave the Arabs the choice to remain living in peace in Israel, for those who lived there prior to the war. Many fled Israel, and some decided to remain living there. Israel, the ONLY democratic country in the Middle East, treated the Arabs and the Palestinians with dignity and respect and they lived for the most part in harmony for many years. One of the ill brewers was Yassar Arafat who was a terrorist and had the blood of many hundreds of innocent people on his hands, including many Christians. Amazingly enough he was presented the Noble Peace Prize. Anyway, he along with most Arab countries did not recognize the State of Israel and launched a Propaganda war against it.

Little is known that Israel time after time has offered the Palestinians solutions that would have allowed them to prosper as an independent state. However, all those offers had been turned down by their leaders (Yassar Arafat), because that would require them to recognize Israel. An impossible solution! Let it be known that Israel always and still only wants peace, for its neighbors and it's citizens which of course includes elderly, mothers and their children. Also, let it be known that if the Arabs laid their weapons down today, there would be peace in the Middle East tomorrow. However, if Israel laid down it's weapons down today (which it uses only for it's own protection), there would no longer be an Israel tomorrow.

What nations did Israel displace?

Depending on the definition of the word "nation" there are two very different answers.Nation as a Politically Sovereign Entity: Israel was created entirely on land that constituted part of the British Mandate of Palestine. A mandate is a sub-national, colonial entity and is certainly not a nation. Therefore Israel did not "replace" or "displace" any nation if this sense of the term is understood. (Would someone say that the creation of the United States displaced a politically sovereign nation? - same argument)Nation as a metaphor for a Conscious Ethnic Group:Whether the Israelis intended to or not (there is much debate on the subject), Arab Palestinians who lived in the British Mandate of Palestine were forced to flee in some parts and were scared into fleeing in other parts of the territory that would become Israel. The Palestinian People were certainly displaced by the Creation of the State of Israel and the ensuing war that this action provoked.

What happened on the day the State of Israel became a nation?

After the Jews in Palestine declared independence as the State of Israel, war immediately broke out between the newborn state and its Arab neighbors, including Egypt and Jordan.

Did Palestine become the country of Israel after the World War 2?

Yes and No. The Mandate of Palestine was merely the British Name for the land they occupied in the Southwestern Levantine region of the Middle East. There was no nation of Palestine or independent Governate of Palestine at any point in the prior 2000 years. When the Jewish population of the Mandate of Palestine declared independence, they used the name Israel to denote their country. The Arab residents of the British Mandate preferred to continue using the name Palestine to represent themselves. The majority of the Mandate's land ended up in Israeli hands in 1949, but some parts were under Arab control. It is these Arab areas that will likely form the basis of the Palestinian State.

What was the name of the mandate that expired allowing Israel to become a nation?

It's usually referred to the British Mandate of Palestine. It was territory won from the Ottoman Empire in 1917-18 (World War 1). From 1945-48 it was a United Nations mandate, before that a League of Nations mandate.

How have Israelis treated the Palestinians?

Israel and the State of Palestine are major enemies. They have been conflicting since the formation of the Jewish state in 1948. Israel and Palestine have been involved in several wars, all of which Israel has won. Israel is a greater military power than Palestine, which is why Israel has won more wars and killed more Palestinians in the process. However, the Israelis are only defending their nation. Israel has occupied Palestine for almost sixty years. Israel has the right to protect itself against attacks, and has a strict military policy to protect itself because it is surrounded by enemy nations. The current government of Palestine is regarded as a terrorist organization by many countries, such as Israel and the United States, which is why Israel is especially cautious.
