Hurricane Irene first formed east of the Lesser Antilles in the Atlantic Ocean as a tropical storm and traveled northwest. It entered the Caribbean and reached hurricane strength shortly before striking Puerto Rico and producing heavy rain in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The storm then continued across the Bahamas where it reached peak intensity as a category 3 storm. It then started to weaken and turned north, making landfall in North Carolina. As Irene continued to weaken it traveled up the U.S. east coast, making it s final land fall on Long Island as a tropical storm and continuing across New England. It finally dissipated as an extratropical low over Quebec.
