Hawaii was an independent kingdom from 1810 until 1893, when some resident American businessmen (along with some Europeans) overthrew the monarchy. A prime mover behind all this was the Dole pineapple people. Hawaii was an independent Republic until 1898, when it was annexed as a territory by the US. This was in the height of the period of American Imperialism under the Republicans, led by President William McKinley. That same year saw the US acquire the Philippines Islands and Puerto Rico.

Pearl Harbor is on the south coast of the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. The Navy established a base there as soon as Hawaii was a territory of the US. At this time in the world there were a great many violent anarchists active, sort of like the terrorists today, but they had nothing they were particularly for, mostly they were against - big, powerful governments. These anarchists liked to try to blow up Navy ships, and a favorite method was to have an anarchist-sympathizing laborer slip a dynamite bomb disguised as a lump of coal into the coal loaded aboard a warship. When this was shoveled into the fire it would explode and blow out the bottom of the ship. It may have been exactly this which destroyed the USS Maine in 1898, but it was blamed on Spain as an excuse for the Spanish-American War. Navies were aware of this danger and tried to control their sources of coal, by having their own bases scattered around where ships could coal. Pearl Harbor began as one of these "coaling stations".

PEARL HARBOR Inlet, southern coast of Oahu island, Hawaii, U.S. It lies 6 miles (10 km) west of Honolulu, forming a landlocked harbor connected with the Pacific Ocean. In 1887 Hawaii granted the U.S. the exclusive use of the harbour as a coating and repair station and in 1908 a naval station was established. In 1941 the harbor was attacked without warning by the Japanese air force, causing great loss of life and precipitating U.S. entry into WWII. It is now the headquarters of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

Naval Station, Honolulu officially came into being on 17 November 1899. There had been much discussion and several treaties were signed between the King of Hawaii and the US prior to that. The location had served off and on as a coaling station for the US Navy over the previous 20 or so years.
