The Catera uses a GM V6 engine designed and manufactured by Opel. This engine is used in Cadillac Cateta, Saabs, and Saturn L and VUE vehicles. Early Saab engines suggested the belt be changed every 30K miles. Latter Cateras suggested every 100K. Several design changes where made to the belt tensioners during this time. If the belt does fail, severe engine damage will result. Basically you lose the engine if the belt fails. That said, the GM Kent Moore j-42069 timing belt tool is required to replace the timing belt on these V6 engines. IF the repair shop HAS the tools, it can be replaced. No attempt should be made to replace the belt without the V6 j-42069 timing belt tool kit. The good news is the $$$ tools can be rented here: http://www.ledfix.com/timingbelttoolrental.html
