Probably. It could also be a connector, damaged wire, faulty computer or any of a number of other problems. A faulty or disconnected VSS can cause hard shifts and the other problems you described. ==NEW ANSWER== DITTO ON THE VSS REPLACEMENT. MY CAR IS NOW BACK TO BEFORE !!...BB

Why will the speedo work on a 1996 Nissan 200sx but the trip and odometer will not?

The odometer runs on the same electronic gear driven sensor as the speedometer so if the speedometer is working and the odometer is not the problem is in the "Speed head" (speedometer unit in the dash). Mine and several others I have seen break at about 40,000 and will need replacing.

Why did the speedometer odometer and tach quit working on a 1995 Silverado if replacing the speed sensor made no difference?

check the fuse panel

1996 ford ranger Odometer and Trip gauge don't work but Speedometer works. How can I fix this Thanks?

Speedometer is ran by electronic sensor on rear end. Odometer is ran from speedometer. If both don't work problem is sensor. If speedometer works sensor is okay. If speedometer works and odometer does not problem is in mechanical parts (gears) of of odometer and has to be replaced. Can get used from eBay (search for speedometer or odometer, is one unit) or take to dealer.

What causes speedometer not to work on gm alero?

If the speedometer and odometer are both not working, I would blame the speed sensor. If only the speedometer does not work and the odometer does work, the cluster is bad.

Why doesn't the speedometer work on a 1993 civic LX?

Does your odometer work? If the speed sensor goes faulty both speedometer and odometer stop working.

How do you replace the odometer sensor on a 1996 Ford Taurus?

There is no such thing as an "odometer sensor." There is a vehicle speed sensor that is located on the output shaft housing of the transmission. That sends info to the speedometer. From there, the speedometer and the odometer are both operated internally, so if your speedo is working, but the odometer isn't, you have a problem inside the speedo head assembly.

Speedometer not working in Chevy 2003 silverado?

If the speedometer is not working but the odometer is, I would suspect the dash cluster is at fault. If both speedometer and odometer are not working I would suspect the speed sensor on the transmission is at fault.

Where is the speed and or odometer sensor located on a 2007 kj Jeep Cherokee?

The speedometer/ odometer signals come from the ABS sensors. There is a sensor at each wheel bearing.

Your odometer stopped working is there a sensor you can change your speedometer works fine?

check the fuse, the speedometer does not run off of a fuse

If the Odometer on a 2004 Impala LS still works can speedometer sensor problems be the only reason why the speedometer doesn't work?

Stepper motor for speedometer has a broken gear in it, causing unpredictable operation. If the odometer is still working, then the speed sensor is OK. Instrument cluster needs repair.

Why is my speedometer still not working in my Honda after replacing the gaugesfusesand speedometer sensor?

could be the speedo cable?

Why would a 1990 Dodge ram B250 van speedometer and odometer and cruise not work is this cable or sensor If sensor where is a good place to start?

When those things on my 92 B250 did not work, I replaced the speed sensor located on the transmission tailshaft and that fixed the problems. Hope that helped! Mark When the speedometer and odometer did not work in my 1990 B250, I had to replace the speed sensor, instrument cluster (speedometer) and replace a tiny gear (odometer) in order to get them working properly
