Amendment XVIII (the Eighteenth Amendment) of the United States Constitution, along with the Volstead Act (which defined "intoxicating liquors" excluding those used for religious purposes), established Prohibition in the United States. 46 states approved the 18th Amendment (prohibition of alcohol) between 1918 and 1919. Only Connecticut and Rhode Island voted against ratification. The amendment was repealed by the 21st Amendment in 1933.
