horses origionally evolved millions of years ago from much smaller mammals called hyracotherium or eohippus. as time went on they got bigger and more developed, with hoofs and not toes. America was the birthplace of the horse, and when the last ice age separated the Americas from the rest of the world, they crossed the land bridges to Asia and Europe and then Australia. then the Spanish and europeans started cross breeding to create new kinds of horses, i.e. the American mustang, Indian Arabian, Spanish falabella, the African zebra, the Russian akhal-teke, the European shetland and shire, przewalski's horse from Asia and so on. then there was the mule and the donkey and warmbloods and ponys and draft horses and new breeds were made. now i think there are something like 200 breeds! hope this helps!

Horses are just called "horses" unless they are in a group together. When horses get in a group together, they are then called a "herd".
