Those in colder climates with less sunlight became lighter in skin color. Those who lived in hotter areas with more intense sunlight evolved to have darker skin.

Science suspects this was an adaptation resulting from strong UV exposure in these areas. Recent studies indicate that one of the earliest inhabitants of Britain (Cheddar Man) was dark skinned bu blur eyed. This may indicate tat at one time almost all humans had a dark skin colour. The "white skin" did not exist prior to 10,000 years ago just like dietary modifications that allowed the consumption of milk.
