Gypsies or Gipsies are a traditionally nomadic people with their own unique language. They are found on every continent and they call themselves Roma. Their language, Romany, is very close to some languages from India. As a matter of fact, their genetic makeup are only found among Indians and Pakistanis.

It's believed that Gypsies originally came from NW India and then they became divided into three main tribes: the Gitanos, the Kalderash, and the Manush.

In recent times, many nations have attempted to help the nomadic lifestyle of the Gypsies by making sure they go to school and/or learn some skills for work. Even today, though, a lot of Gypsies still face discrimination and poverty. In 2005, the World Bank and some eight European countries came together to offer a ten-year program to improve the lives of Gypsies worldwide.

Slaves taken from the Sindhi part of northern India ( now Pakistan) by Muslim conquerors were sold to the Egyptian Mamelukes. The ones who converted to Islam were freed according to Muslim law and hence were called by Europeans 'gyptians'. The Ottomans later brought them into Europe and they became roma , sinti who remained slaves and christian( Austria) etc.

You come across these people in many countries; they do not have a national territory or their own government. Legends describe their arrival from Egypt, but these are only Fairy Tales. people in the west associate their origin with Eastern Europe, like Hungary and Romania. That's false, even if indeed large gypsy populations are to be found there (in Bulgaria they represent 15 % of the population, 10 % in Hungary and 7 % in Romania). Gypsies (or Romani, as they call themselves, the Gypsy word for "men") originated in northern India 1,000 years ago. Their language, called Romani, is undoubtedly related to Hindu and other Indian languages (named Indo-Aryan). Nobody knows why they left India. Some say that their ancestors, artisans and artists, accompanied troops and after some military conflicts left India. By 1,300 AD they reached Europe, after passing through Persia and Turkey.
