the last motor you would ever want in a VW is the 1.8T 20 valve. The engine oil capacity is too small for the engine. This causes the engine oil to overheat and turn to sludge. I had a 2000 Passat wagon with this engine and my motor had so much sludge in it the oil pressure light would come on during hard braking or cornering. I was so pissed that I got screwed, sold the car after 2 months of ownership, lost 2500 dollars and to add insult to injury, VW sent me a letter a few months after I sold it offering to REPLACE my engine at a small cost to me. VW knew that they had a bad engine design and why you would want to use a known mistake of theirs is beyond me. Find out if you can use another and better engine like the 2.0T used in the Golf, Jetta, Eos, Gti, Tourag, Beetle, and some Audi's. Even a VR6 engine would be a better choice.
Yes. My 1999 Passat 1.8T 20v sport does. The reason I know is it just failed (along with the clutch) and I had to have it replaced at vast expense.
