What was the life span of the passenger pigeon?
The passenger pigeon, Ectopistes Migratorious, once the most populous bird on earth, went extinct because of overhunting in the early 1900's. The bird had a life span of 7-12 years, sometimes slightly more. (This would probably indicate the lifespan in the wild: Martha, the last passenger pigeon, live and died in captivity at the age of 29. This is similar to the Rock Pigeon [the common city pigeon], that lives about 3 years in the wild, yet 15 to 20 years as a pet.)

What makes an ostrich different from pigeon?
An ostrich is much larger than a pigeon. A pigeon can fly while an ostrich cannot. A pigeon cannot run as fast as an ostrich. A pigeon has a longer tail than an ostrich. Ostriches live in harems while pigeons are mostly monogamous. Ostriches live for far longer than pigeons. Pigeon chicks develop slowly, while ostrich chicks can walk minutes after hatching. Ostriches do not have crops, while pigeons do. Ostriches nest on the ground, while pigeons do not. Wild ostrich populations have declined, while pigeon populations have soared.
