Where is the CABIN air filter?

The cabin filter is located in the worst spot ever for a part that should be replaced every 12,000 miles. It is next to the gas pedal which is a hard part to reach. What you need to do is pull down the carpeting next to the gas pedal, remove the plastic panel that covers the area under the stearing wheel. (this may not be required, but gives you way more room to move around.) Then you need to take off 3 10mm nuts to get the gas pedal out. This is purely an electronic pedal so once you take the 3 nuts off the pedal will still be connected to the wires but you can swing it out of the way. After this you can remove the screws that hold the cover of the cabin air filter housing. This was probably THE MOST FRUSTRATING service I have ever done to any car I have ever owned. It may be worth it to just have the dealer do it. You need a long and flexible socket extension to get at the nuts. I am not sure why Volvo put it in such a horrible position. It sounds like it was in a better spot in previous years. -afcab

Actually, it is much easier than the last post. All you need to do is open the hood, remove two screws from a rectangular plastic box in front of the latch, where the air intake tube is and then slide the panel out that was fastenedwith the screws you removed. That panel, which you will see after you slide it out, contains the air filter. It's that easy!!The previous guy who posted the other directions must work for a dealer. Under the gas pedal...whatever!

The answer that I crossed out is pertaining to the engine air filter. This discussion is to where the CABIN air filter is. Which is precisely where I described it in the first paragraph at the top. Why would working for a dealer change the location of the filter?

On the passengers side, look underneath the glove box and you will see a kick panel. It is held in place by two Phillips screws, so remove those two screws. Remove the panel, then slide the cabin filter out and replace it. Where can I buy the filter, I know that's what you are thinking, check either your Volvo dealer or Amazon.com On Amazon, search for TYC Cabin Air Filter for VOLVO 40 Series: S40 Old Style, V40 (2000-2004). Price is roughly $16
