take a look under the hood when facing the compartment from the drivers side you will see your throttle body ( aka in older cars a carburetor) under that you will find the starter motor connected to the engine block. You need to buy a manual, Haynes or similar manual. Get to know the whereabouts of the most important parts of your car........
Usually in a removable housing at the engine end of the upper radiator hose

you have to take the starter out of the car and dismantle it.....it's an integral unit
Take it to the junk yard starter is almost impossible to remove . Good Luck

In the 1989 Volvo 740 GL with a Bosch system it is located just above the steering column on the dash.
In the centre console behind the ash tray. AH
in the distributor in the rear of the engine. sometimes known as a hall sensor
i have a 1989 740 and mine is located on under the hood it the green 1 on the side next to the air filter
