That is a very good question. For several years before the war, most Americans wanted to stay out of any conflicts in Europe. This opinion was referred to as "Isolationists".
When the Japanese attacked the US Navy base at Pearl Harbor, then most Americans wanted revenge. This is similar to how many Americans felt after 9-11 attack on the World Trade Center. Many men joined the Army to go fight.
However, many of these men went to fight in Europe and not Japan. For the most part, most of them felt like they were fighting to bring Freedom and Democracy to the countries that had been occupied by the ruthless leaders of Japan and Germany.
The US fought Japan, Germany and Italy during WWII. Also
Tunisia, Algiers, Belgium, Netherlands, Austria
US soldiers served in Iran and Russia where they operated a supply routes.
During World War 2 the armed forces of the United States fought in several locations. Here are some places that the USA sent troops and warships to combat the enemy:
A. Naval, army & marines fought in the islands of the Pacific Ocean as the US & Japan were at war;
B. In the war against Germany, US forces invaded Normandy, France. They also landed in North Africa as a route through to Sicily and the Italian peninsula. American troops also fought in Germany; and
C. In the Atlantic Ocean US forces used their warships and submarines to battle German naval forces in the Atlantic Ocean; and
D. The only US fighting in Japan was a surprise air raid on Tokyo, followed in 1945 by the bombing of Nagasaki & Hiroshima with the atomic bomb.
The US forces primarily fought in Europe, North Africa, and the Pacific Islands. A few also fought the Japanese in China and Burma.
In the war against the Germans and Italians, the major fighting was first in Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya (1942), then in Italy and southern Austria (1943-1945). On D-Day, June 6, 1944, troops landed in France and fought through Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg to reach Germany.
In the Pacific, most of the islands seized by the Japanese had been European colonies. The more important of these islands were the Gilbert, Marshall, Marianas, Caroline, and Palau groups. Eventually they fought in New Guinea and Borneo, recaptured the Philippines, and landed on Iwo Jima and Okinawa, two of the island possessions of Japan itself.
In Alaska, the Pacific, China, Burma, India, Africa, Europe and throughout the Atlantic.
It all depends what kind of troops you mean, America was in Germany and Japan, British troops were in Germany and other countries to protect the empire.
Across the full expanse of the Pacific Ocean, in Alaska, China, Burma and India. They served in North Africa and the North Sea as well as much of mainland Europe.
