The state of Virgina. The Old Dominion became two states when the western part of the state separated by the Allegheny Mountains decided to stay in the Union & became West Virginia as we know it today. It was & still is one of the poorest of all states & it is the only one of the fifty states that had a higher population in 1950 than it does today. The remainder of the state & vastly wealthier, seceeded from the Union to join the Confederate States of America. The capital of the Confederacy was eventually moved from Montgomery, Alabama to Richmond, Virginia to appease the wealthy Virginians.
