The permanent member of the security council are the United States of America, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, the Republic of France and the People's Republic of China.

The Russian Federation holds the seat left vacant upon the collapse of the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China succeed the Republic of China.

The original permanent members of the security counsel comprise the Great Powers as they existed at the end of WWII.

The original members included the USSR instead of the Russian Federation. The USSR became its successor state, in a form. The initial Chinese state was the Republic of China, today only in control of Taiwan.
