The site of the federal arsenal where a militant abolitionist, John Brown, led the famous raid in 1859 is Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Brown, along with a group of followers, hoped to incite a slave rebellion by seizing weapons from the arsenal. The raid was ultimately unsuccessful, and Brown was captured, tried, and executed.
In 1859, John Brown and his militant abolitionists wanted to free slaves by force, and they sought to steal arms and ammunition from the armory at Harper's Ferry, Virginia (now Harpers Ferry, West Virginia). Unfortunately, he had too few men, and once inside they were surrounded by nearby townspeople and militia. A detachment of US Marines under Colonel Robert E. Lee arrived, and stormed the building they had occupied, killing several of Brown's men. John Brown himself was captured alive, tried, and hanged, along with four of his men.
The big event that occurred there was part of the Civil War: in 1859, a white abolitionist named John Brown tried to start an armed rebellion of slaves. He and twenty men conducted a raid on a US arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia (in some books, the town back then did not have an apostrophe, and was written Harpers Ferry); Brown hoped to capture enough weapons for the slave revolt. But the raid failed, as Col. Robert E. Lee thwarted Brown's attempt; Brown was wounded, and taken prisoner. He was later executed. But Brown's efforts as well as his passionate defense of his actions when he was being tried, inflamed many opponents of slavery, and they vowed to carry on the fight.
