The first copy machine was made in 1887 by Thomas Edison. It was a stencil-type machine, which was later called a mimeograph. In 1907, the Photostat machine was invented by Oscar Gregory, in Kansas City. Also, around the same time, the Rectigraph was invented by George Beidler. Then came the Kodak Verifax, in 1940, followed by the Thermofax in 1950, and then, the Xerox machine, invented by Chester Carlton, was introduced in 1960.

Today, the more popular brands for fax machines would be HP, Brother, Xerox, Canon, Ricoh, Panasonic, Sharp, Kyocera, Lexmark, and other brands.

Alexander Bain is credited with the invention of the fax machine, and was the first to send an image from one machine to another.

Frederick Bakewell is credited with improving Bain's invention, and created the first invention that could be considered to be similar to today's fax machines.

Giovanni Caselli is credited with the first widely used fax machine, and implemented a fax service from Paris to Lyons in 1860 (around the time of the US Civil War).

I believe David Gestetner, a Hungarian emigrant to England invented the first copy machine around 1880. He started producing machines for sale in England in 1906. His machines were a great success and were constantly updated with new technology.
