The greatest Southern general was Robert E. Lee. Lee was the commander of the Army of Northern Virginia and led that famous army to the most notable victories the Confederacy ever achieved.

Alternatively Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson is a challenger. Jackson is most famous for being Lee's most trusted subordinate and for his brilliant performance at Chancellorsville. He also oversaw the victory in what was possible the finest campaign of the war in the 1862 Valley Campaign.

Nathan Bedford Forrest is also considered a challenger. The "Wizard of the Saddle" is widely believed to be the greatest cavalryman in the history of America and his legend is only increased when you learn that he had no prior military trainer when the Civil War began.

And the fourth major challenger is John S. Mosby. The "Gray Ghost" was the finest guerrilla commander of the war and could keep thousands of men occupied with only a couple of hundred men.
