Wait, from whose perspective are you talking from? If your talking from America's point of view then Great Britain was their enemy and America was Great Britain's enemy if you think about it from their perspective. This is just a request: Try to be more specfic on your question!

At first, beginning in the spring of 1775, the clashes were between the thirteen nearly-autonomous colonies of Great Britain on the Atlantic seaboard of the continent of North America and the British Regular armed forces attempting to enforce the rule of King George III Hanover, who declared the colonies to be in rebellion and, in a decision which proved unpopular with his subjects, hired mercenaries from the German state of Hesse-Cassel to attempt to crush this perceived rebellion. But in early July of 1776, with the now-legendary resolution from the Second Continental Congress that became part of the Declaration of Independence, this conflict changed primarily to a full-scale war between the newly-formed United States of America and the Empire of Great Britain. Moreover, after the Monarchies of France and Spain joined the war on the American side, they were able to prevent the British Empire from crushing the American "rebellion" and thus guaranteed the success of what became the Revolutionary War. (Great Britain, which lost the war, still calls it "The War Of The Insurrection.")
