There were two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis.

The Allies

From the ranks of the many Allied powers (which included Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Greece, Holland, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, South Africa, Yugoslavia), the British Empire and the British Commonwealth, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the United States of America were known, colloquially, as "The Big Three". The United States of America joined the Allies following the attack on Pearl Harbor, on 7 December 1941. The Declaration by United Nations, on 1 January 1942, officially united 26 nations as Allies. The informal Big 3 alliance of the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, and the United States emerged in the later half of the war, and their decisions determined Allied strategy around the world.

The Axis

Was comprised the countries that were opposed to the Allies during World War II. The three major Axis powers - Germany, Italy, and Japan - were part of a military alliance on the signing of the Tripartite Pact in September 1940, which officially founded the Axis powers. At their zenith, the Axis powers ruled empires that dominated large parts of Europe, Africa, East and Southeast Asia and the Pacific Ocean, but World War II ended with their total defeat. Like the Allies, membership of the Axis was fluid, and some nations entered and later left the Axis during the course of the war.
