Presidents Tyler, Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Arthur and Ford were not elected as president .

Polk, Pierce, Buchanan, Hayes, Coolidge,Truman and Lyndon Johnson did not run for a second term.

John Adams, John Q. Adams, Van Buren, B. Harrison, Taft, Theodore Roosevelt, Hoover, Carter and George H. W. Bush ran for re-election and lost.

W. H. Harrison, Taylor, Garfield, Harding and Kennedy died in their first term and so could not try for re-election.
