This question is a two part question that has no answer. The Mormon Trail is commonly known as the trek westward from the state of Illinois to the (now state) of Utah which began in 1846. The Prophet Joseph Smith was assassinated prior to the trek westward in 1844. Therefore Joseph Smith never traveled the Mormon Trail.
Joseph Smith, first prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (or Mormons) led the church in the establishment of the church, and then its migration to three different westward headquarters. The only "trail" that Joseph Smith himself travelled was from Kirtland, Ohio to Clay County, Missouri during the campaign known as "Zion's Camp." In this instance, the prophet led about 200 men, women, and children in an effort to reclaim land from which Latter-day Saint settlers had been driven.
However, the prophet was assassinated before the church emmigrated to the Great Salt Lake valley in 1847. Hence Brigham Young led the exodus instead of Joseph.
The Mormon Trail.
While there have been many people named Joseph Smith, the most well known from the time period Joseph Smith, the founding Prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church). Joseph Smith never travelled farther west than Missouri, so he could not have discovered the California Trail.
The Mormon Trail was the route, but it did travel on the Oregon trial too. :)
Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum were murdered while awaiting trail in the jail at Carthage, Illinois. A large, armed anti-Mormon mob stormed the jail, shooting into the upstairs bedroom where a handful of Mormon leaders, including Joseph and Hyrum, were staying. The trial was regarding Joseph (as governor of Nauvoo) ordering an anti-Mormon newspaper to cease publication in order to preserve the public peace.

Joseph Smith along with his family and a few of the other prophets who took charge after his death. Incorrect answer above. Improved answer - Brigham Young and church members - pioneers - traveled the Mormon Trail. In addition, the trail was used by trappers, explorers, and other people traveling to the west coast regions.
After the government of Illinois ordered the Mormons to leave in 1846, Brigham Young decided to lead the Church membership to the west because Joseph Smith had prophesied years earlier that the Church would finally find a home in the Rocky Mountains. The combination of being ordered to leave Illinois and Joseph Smith's prophesy lead them to create the trail.
Joseph Smith, considered the first prophet of this dispensation by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the 'Mormon" church) was arrested twice and murdered while awaiting trail at Carthage Jail in Illinois.
The trails used are the: California trail, Sante Fi Trail, Old Spanish Trail, Mormon Trail, and the Southern Emigrant Trail.
Brigham Young lead the Mormon Pioneers from Nauvoo, Illinois to Salt Lake City, Utah. They left February 2, 1846 and arrived July 24, 1847, staying several months in Winter Quarters, Nebraska.
