because they wanted to rule Britain
Alexander the great wanted to rule the world, and he did, and he was so gay. :) He actually named a river after a male concubine that fell into that river and died. Stories say he was a cutie too.

But are you sure you have your history lined up correctly? Britain was not a force then, Persia (Iran), and that is what Alexander wanted. He also wanted Africa as well.

England started rising to power after the medival era 15-1700s. Before then, the influence was the Middle East. There may be correlation that shows that the Greeks stole their master ideas from the earlier Persians--the arch, etc.

The Roman penetration into Scotland was part of the invasion of northern England which was ordered by the emperor Vespasian and carried out by Agricola in 78-79. The Romans took over the Lowlands but did not manage to conquer the Highlands. They went as far north as Inverness, but by following the coast, rather than taking over the Highlands. Under the emperor Hadrian they withdrew from Scotland and built Hadrian's Wall as the border between Roman Britannia.

Under the emperor Antoninus Pius the Romans pushed into Scotland again and built the Antonine Wall between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde. However, they then withdrew back to Hadrian's Wall.

It is thought that the Romans did not attempt to conquer the Highlands and withdrew from Scotland because of the fierce resistance of the Picts of Scotland and the terrain of the Highlands which favoured their resistance. It is also thought that Scotland probably was not of worthwhile economic interest to the Romans and therefore continuing the fights with the Picts would be an endless waste of Roman lives and resources.

Two men, Romolus and his brother, founded the city of Rome in 754 BCE. However, before they got the city up and running, they got into a huge fight over who would get to lead it. Romolus's brother was killed in the spar, thus the city was named after Romolus.
